The Art of Well-Being: A community creation day using Catalan heritage
A lot of what keeps us mentally well happens outside a therapy room too, in the small moments of making something, talking to a neighbour, feeling like you belong somewhere. That's what The Art of Well-Being is about.
Held at a civic centre in El Raval to mark World Mental Health Day, the day is free, drop-in and needs no prior artistic experience. People can come and go throughout, working at three creative stations, each inspired by a different piece of Catalan visual culture:
- Miró station - colour and sign: creating a personal symbol using Miró's palette and visual language.
- Tàpies station - matter and mark: working with texture, layers and material.
- Textile trencadís station - the fragment and the reconstruction: piecing together small mosaics from reused fabric scraps, in the spirit of Modernist trencadís.
The day closes with a shared moment where participants can talk about what they made and why. Every piece created gets photographed and brought together afterwards into a digital exhibition on Iguality's website, so the work doesn't just disappear once the day is over.
The idea behind it is simple: bring neighbours of every background together to make something as equals, with no divide between hosts and guests, and let that shared act of creating become a way of looking after each other's mental health too.
