What is an Association and how does it work?
What an association is
An "associació" is a non-profit legal structure common in Catalunya, built around its members rather than its owners or shareholders. Members are the sovereign body of the association, they set its direction, elect who runs it, and hold it accountable, all governed by the Catalan Civil Code (Book Three) and, in Iguality's case, by our own statutes on top of that.
The role of the board of directors
The board (Junta Directiva) handles the association's day-to-day running: managing finances, staff, and programmes, and representing Iguality externally. But the board answers to the members, not the other way around, the General Assembly elects the board, can remove it, and has the final say on major decisions like the budget or changes to the statutes.
Members can be local or international
You don't need to live in Catalunya, or even in Spain, to be a member of Iguality. Our General Assembly is held online specifically so that members anywhere can take part and vote, wherever they're based.
