The Vuelta de Iguality Guide for participants

Amazing, you signed up! You’ll be joining dozens of cyclists that will ride for a good cause, Iguality. In this Event Guide you will find all the information you need to prepare and join the event.

Guide navigation

The guide is a simple one-page website. You can use the buttons below to easily navigate it and find the information you need. Each information section has a button to go back to this navigation section.

Getting there & Transport

Main points

Easily click on the links below to find the exact Google Maps locations to navigate to.

If you are staying at our arranged accommodation from Friday to Saturday, the start is just a 3 Minute walk away.

Specific directions

By train

There is a direct train from Barcelona to the train station close to the event start. From the train station, it’s a 10-15 minute cycle or 40m walk to the starting point and the accommodation. You can take the train in Barcelona from the following stations:

  • Barcelona Sants
  • Passeig de Gracia
  • Clot

The stop to get out for the event (and also the accommodation) is Guelba. If you miss the train to Gualba (it doesn’t go so often), you can also take the train to Sant Celoni, from where it is a 10 kilometer ride to the start (bring lights!). You can find detailed train details with the most accurate departure times on the website of Rodalies here

The duration is more or less 1 hour, but the train service in Catalonia (Renfe/Rodalies) tends to have delays, so if you travel on the morning of the event, we recommend you to take the earliest train. If you arrive early after all, we will already be at the start from 7:15 onwards!

By car

Just navigate to the start point on Google Maps given above, or type in this address: Passeig del Montseny, 18, 08474 Gualba, Barcelona, Spain. The total distance from Barcelona to Gualba is 50 kilometers and the journey should take about 42 minutes without traffic.

By bike

Wanna warm up and ride to Sant Celoni? Possible! Here’s a suggested route to get to the arranged accommodation (passing by the start point in Sant Celoni as well). At your own risk of course.

Registering & Start

The start

The starting point will be located next to the main town square in Gualba, a town approximately one hour from Barcelona by car or train. You can find the start location on Google Maps over here. Cycling will begin promptly at 8:00 AM. We kindly ask participants to arrive between 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM to allow sufficient time for registration and jersey collection (if applicable). Our team will be on-site from 7:15 AM to assist you.

There is a possibility to leave your stuff (1 bag) at the start, although you may need to wait a bit when you return to get it back (our volunteers are present at the finish 90% of the day).

Registering

As you arrive at the starting point, our team of friendly volunteers, easily recognizable in their blue Iguality T-shirts, will be waiting to welcome you. Keep an eye out for our banner displaying our logo and name – you can’t miss it! Be sure to register at the designated table to ensure we’re aware of your presence for safety purposes.

If you got the jersey when registering, you can pick it up at the registration table as well.

Regulations & Guidelines

Key requirements

  • Safety First: Prioritise your safety and that of others. Always follow traffic rules, and stay alert on the road.
  • Wear a helmet: Helmets must be worn at all times while cycling. If you arrive at the start without one, you won’t be able to cycle as part of our event.
  • Respect Traffic Rules: Obey traffic signals, signs, and signals from event marshals. Cyclists are subject to the same rules as other vehicles.
  • No Littering: Dispose of waste responsibly. Keep the route clean and use designated trash disposal points.
  • Have lights: In case of adverse weather conditions, and for those returning late on the event day due to the length of their ride, it is crucial to equip your bicycle with reliable front and rear lights.

Other important guidelines

  • Stay Hydrated: Carry water and stay hydrated throughout the ride. Utilize designated water points if available.
  • Ride in a Single File: When riding in groups, maintain a single-file formation to allow other vehicles to pass safely.
  • Keep Right, Pass Left: Ride on the right side of the road and pass slower riders on the left, communicating your intentions clearly.
  • Signal and Communicate: Use hand signals to indicate turns, stops, and obstacles. Communicate verbally when necessary.
  • Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a safe distance from the cyclist in front to avoid collisions, especially during sudden stops.
  • Be Courteous: Treat fellow cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists with respect. Maintain a positive and friendly attitude.
  • Emergency Contact: Carry identification and an emergency contact number in case of any unforeseen incidents.
  • Medical Attention: Seek medical assistance if you feel unwell or encounter any injuries during the event.
  • Stay Informed: Pay attention to event announcements and instructions from organizers.
  • Celebrate Responsibly: After the event, celebrate responsibly if there are post-ride activities. Remember that alcohol and cycling don’t mix.

Remember, the aim is to create an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone involved. Following these guidelines, including wearing a helmet, ensures that the cycling event is not only fun but also well-organised and respectful of all participants and the community.

Insurance & More

Please note that this is general information, and we strongly encourage you to verify your personal situation, as coverage may vary or not apply to you. If you are travelling from outside Spain, we recommend that you secure travel insurance that includes coverage for sports accidents.

Medical Insurance

As this event is not a race and will take place on public roads, in general, the following guidelines apply for any medical care you may need (except if you opt for private healthcare services):

  • For residents of Spain: The Catalan/Spanish public health system generally covers any medical expenses incurred before, during, or after the event. However, please note that recovery treatments, such as physiotherapy, may not be fully covered. You may wish to consider additional insurance for these services.
  • For residents of the European Union: The Catalan/Spanish public health system typically covers any medical expenses incurred during the event. However, recovery treatments, such as physiotherapy, might not be covered by your home country. It is advisable to secure specific insurance for these services.
  • For residents outside the European Union: The Catalan/Spanish public health system should cover any medical expenses incurred during the event, as Spain provides universal healthcare to all. However, recovery treatments, such as physiotherapy, may not be covered by your home country. We recommend obtaining specific insurance for these services.

Civic Liability Insurance

We strongly recommend that you have civic liability insurance, not just for this event, but in general, to cover any accidental harm you may cause to others.

  • For residents of Spain or the EU: Specific bicycle civic liability insurance is available, such as through MAPFRE.
  • For international participants: A comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes civic liability is highly recommended.

Event Insurance

In addition to the above, we have arranged basic event insurance to cover any costs arising from an emergency or accident involving participants during the event. You can review the policy details of our Policy with the number 055937868 over here. However, given the basic coverage provided by the public healthcare system, we do not anticipate needing to rely on this insurance. If necessary, we can contact Allianz in the event of an accident at +34 91 325 55 68. The following applies to specific situations:

  • Urgent Medical Care: In case of a life-threatening emergency, seek immediate treatment at the nearest medical facility. Allianz will cover costs for the first 48 hours. Post this period, the patient must be transferred to an Allianz network facility for continued care.
  • Non-Emergency Situations: Contact Allianz via the provided emergency number (+34 91 325 55 68) to receive assistance at an approved facility within their network. All medical assistance must be pre-authorised by Allianz to ensure coverage.
  • Reimbursement: For expenses outside of Allianz’s network, reimbursement may be possible, but pre-authorisation or contacting Allianz immediately is crucial to ensure this.

Support & Emergencies

We are a nonprofit organization and our FREE event is ALMOST completely run by volunteers, but we have done our best to organize a professional and well-supported event to ensure you have a great experience. Here is what we offer and recommend.

Physiotherapy

We are extremely happy and honoured that we will have a volunteer physiotherapist, Lucy, available at the event throughout the entire day to offer massages and support for some relief or to address minor injuries. Lucy will arrive on Friday evening for those staying the whole weekend and will be around until Sunday, so you can also approach her for help before and after the event. Please keep in mind that she may not be able to attend to everyone, and will prioritise those who have injuries or specific issues.

Car support

While we won’t be able to stay with each cyclist throughout the event, we will have a support car around the route. If you have any bike problems that you can’t fix yourself, just flag down the support car and they’ll be happy to give you a lift back to the start or to a bike shop.

Please note that the people in the support car are volunteers and don’t have any specific bike repair knowledge. They’re there to help you get back to the start point (or for emergencies, see below). Also note it may take some time, considering the car may be helping others already.

Emergencies

If you have an accident or face any other serious issue, either:

  • Reach out to the local emergency services by calling 112 for life-threatening or dangerous situations. Note that the police in Catalonia is called ‘Mossos d’esquedra’, but it’s also possible you will be connected to local police (‘Policia Local’).
  • Reach out to our volunteers to arrange a car to come and help you, or receive advice on the best steps to take.

Please note that our volunteers will do their best to help you but do not bear any (legal) responsibility. We emphasise that you are mainly responsible for what happens on the road and in case of doubt, we always recommend you to reach out to emergency services.

Collecting donations & Sharing

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Before the event, share the donations page with your friends, family, and colleagues—or even directly with your company—to encourage them to sponsor your fantastic efforts on event day. Donations made on your behalf will appear on the donation page. If you’ve chosen to be featured in the cyclist gallery, your profile will also be visible there.

The purpose of the donations

The raised donations go directly to the work of Iguality, and will allow us to support at least 40 people on a yearly basis through free psychosocial support, mainly in the form of weekly 1h therapy sessions.

Need some help or inspiration?

Find our Fundraising Kit over here where you can find template texts (in 🇬🇧 & 🇪🇸 ) and some images and videos to share.

  • On the event day, a dedicated volunteer with a high-quality camera will be there to capture the excitement.
  • Starting with the event kickoff, we’ll aim to photograph each participant. While we’ll try to snap shots during the ride too, please understand we can’t guarantee coverage of everyone.
  • After the event, we’ll share all the event photos for free. As a friendly request, we might ask for a social media follow or a sign-up for our newsletter in return – it’s a small gesture that helps us continue doing what we love.
  • Rest assured, the pictures will be shared in their original quality, for free!

Tips & Advice

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, we’ve put together a set of essential tips to ensure you have a fantastic and successful ride. From bike maintenance and nutrition strategies to staying hydrated and pacing yourself, this page will help you make the most of your cycling adventure.

Don’t forget your lights – it can be dark in the morning, and definitely if you’re doing a long route and return late on the event day!

Before the event

  • Bike Check: Ensure your bike is in proper working condition. Check tire pressure, brakes, gears, and overall functionality. A pre-event tune-up can prevent issues during the ride.
  • Extra Tubes and Tools: Carry spare inner tubes, tire levers, a multi-tool, and a portable bike pump. These can be lifesavers in case of a flat tire or minor mechanical issues.
  • Nutrition Planning: Plan your nutrition strategy based on the distance you’ll be covering. Pack energy gels, bars, fruits, and snacks that are easy to carry and consume while riding.
  • Hydration: Hydrate well before the event and carry water bottles or a hydration pack. Depending on the weather and distance, aim to drink about one bottle every hour.
  • Clothing: Dress appropriately for the weather. Consider layers that can be added or removed as needed. Don’t forget to wear padded cycling shorts for comfort.
  • Check the Weather: Stay informed about the weather forecast for the event day. Dress and prepare accordingly for any changes in conditions – Montseny can get very cold even in September!
  • Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and consider a lightweight cycling cap under your helmet to protect your head and eyes from the sun.
  • Route Familiarization: Study the route map and elevation profile. Know where challenging sections, rest stops, and refueling points are located.

During the Ride

  • Pace Yourself: Start at a comfortable pace and avoid going all out from the beginning, especially for longer distances. Consistency is key.
  • Turn on Lights: Ensure your bike lights are on when riding in low-visibility conditions, such as bad weather or darkness, to increase your visibility to others and improve safety.
  • Stay Hydrated: Sip water regularly, especially in warmer conditions. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and cramps.
  • Eat Regularly: Consume small amounts of food/snacks throughout the ride to maintain energy levels. Don’t wait until you’re hungry.
  • Rest Stops: Utilize rest stops strategically. Refill your water, grab some food, and take short breaks to stretch.
  • Group Riding Etiquette: If riding in a group, communicate with hand signals and calls to indicate turns, obstacles, and stopping. Maintain a safe distance from the rider in front.
  • Emergency Contact: Carry a card with emergency contacts, medical information, and any allergies you may have. Store it in an accessible place.
  • Pain Awareness: Listen to your body. If you experience persistent pain, discomfort, or feel unwell, don’t hesitate to seek medical assistance.

After the Event

  • Recovery Nutrition: After finishing, consume a balanced meal rich in protein and carbs to aid recovery. Rehydrate with electrolyte-rich drinks.
  • Stretching: Engage in gentle stretching to prevent muscle tightness and promote recovery. Foam rolling can also help alleviate muscle soreness.
  • Rest and Sleep: Get a good night’s sleep to support your body’s recovery process.
  • Bike Maintenance: Clean and inspect your bike after the event. Address any issues that arose during the ride.
  • Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on your performance, what went well, and areas for improvement. This can help you prepare for future events.

Remember that cycling events are as much about enjoyment as they are about challenges. Stay positive, stay safe, and have a great ride!

Registration & Changes

Modifying aspects of your registration, like your chosen route or your personal details, is easy. Nonetheless, please note that certain changes, such as cancelling accommodation or jersey selections, might not be feasible due to specific timelines. For clarity on what adjustments can be made, don’t hesitate to contact us. To make simple changes, just open the link for editing your registration in the confirmation email of your registration.

Weather & Force Majeure

Weather

We anticipate pleasant weather during mid-September, typically ranging from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius with plenty of sunshine. However, September can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to pack accordingly. Here’s a list of essentials to ensure you’re prepared for any unexpected weather:

  1. Regular Warm Cycling Jacket: Since you’ll be cycling, a regular warm cycling jacket is ideal for keeping you comfortable during the ride, providing the necessary warmth.
  2. Rain Jacket: It’s essential to have a rain jacket to shield yourself from unexpected rain showers, as wet conditions can make cycling uncomfortable.
  3. Gloves: Cycling gloves can serve a dual purpose by protecting your hands from the elements and providing a better grip on the handlebars.
  4. Leg Warmers: For cycling, leg warmers are essential, especially if you encounter colder conditions at higher elevations or during the early morning or evening parts of your ride.

Check the video: Top Tips & Tricks For Cycling In Winter Conditions

Cancellation

Unless conditions are deemed dangerous (as outlined in the ‘Force Majeure’ section below), it’s important to note that rain or other adverse weather conditions may not necessarily result in the event’s cancellation. We will diligently monitor weather forecasts in the days leading up to the event and provide timely updates to keep you informed. A final decision regarding the event’s status in the event of rain or adverse weather conditions will be made one or two days prior to the scheduled date, ensuring that your safety and enjoyment remain our top priorities.

As mentioned before as well, participating in the event is always at your own risk. If, for instance, we decide to proceed with the ride in the rain but you prefer not to, please know that we completely understand and respect your decision to postpone your ride. Your safety and comfort are paramount, and we want everyone to have a positive and enjoyable experience.

Force majeure

In the event of Force Majeure, which includes extreme weather conditions or other unforeseen potential dangers on the scheduled event day, our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all participants. We have devised a contingency plan for the event day to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment:

  1. Event Rescheduling: If the conditions on the planned event day are deemed unsafe or unviable, we have several options. First, we may reschedule the event to Sunday, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  2. Shorter Routes: If the weather is very bad, we may choose to ask everyone to ride one route shorter than planned, to ensure that even with the bad weather you are able to safely finish and get back before the dark sets in.
  3. Alternative Ride Day: Alternatively, we may plan another suitable day for the ride, allowing everyone to participate under safer conditions. We understand that schedules may vary, so we will strive to accommodate the majority.
  4. Individual Ride Option: In cases where rescheduling is challenging due to diverse commitments, we encourage participants to select a day that suits them best and undertake a comparable ride at their convenience. Rest assured, we’ll provide support in creating the route and offering guidance to ensure a fulfilling experience.

Other important notes about a situation of Force Majeure:

  1. Weekend Gathering: Regardless of the ride’s outcome, the weekend will continue as planned. We will still convene at the accommodation as scheduled, even if it means adapting the activities to the circumstances. This could entail a shorter ride, a scenic walk or hike, or other enjoyable group activities.
  2. Insurance and Cancellations: Please be aware that in the event of Force Majeure, participants are responsible for having adequate insurance coverage to address any cancellation-related costs. Unfortunately, we cannot offer cancellation options for the apartment bookings, as these arrangements are typically non-refundable.
