In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in the mental health of young men across Europe, including in Barcelona and Catalonia. Many young men are experiencing increased levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, often feeling unable to talk openly about their struggles. Social pressures, economic uncertainty, and the lingering effects of the pandemic have all contributed to this worrying trend.

According to a report by the World Health Organization, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young men in Europe, highlighting the urgent need for better support and open conversations about mental health (World Health Organization, 2023).

At the same time, the so-called "manosphere" has been growing rapidly online. This term refers to a collection of websites, forums, and social media accounts that promote harmful ideas about masculinity, often encouraging anger, misogyny, and isolation. Many young men, searching for answers or a sense of belonging, are drawn into these communities.

Unfortunately, the manosphere often discourages seeking help for mental health issues and instead promotes unhealthy attitudes towards women and society. Studies have shown that exposure to these ideas can worsen mental health and increase feelings of alienation (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2024).

The impact of the manosphere is not limited to individuals; it also affects society as a whole. When young men are influenced by these negative messages, it can lead to more aggressive behaviour, strained relationships, and a lack of trust in support systems.

This makes it even harder for those who are struggling to reach out for help. In Barcelona and Catalonia, we are are working to counteract these effects by offering free mental health care and inclusive activities, creating safe spaces where everyone can feel heard and supported.

It is important for communities, families, and organisations to work together to address these challenges. Encouraging open discussions about mental health, challenging harmful stereotypes, and providing accessible support can make a real difference.

By promoting positive role models and healthy ways of coping, we can help young men find better paths forward and reduce the influence of the manosphere on our society (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2024).
