How to get help in a mental health crisis in Barcelona / Catalonia / Spain
If your life is at risk right now
If you’re feeling like you might harm yourself, or have already done so, or are experiencing thoughts of suicide, it’s essential to seek immediate help. You can:
- Call 061 (Catalonia) or 112 for an ambulance / emergency services (Available 24/7)
- Go straight to the emergencies of your nearest hospital
If you can’t do this on your own, ask someone to help you.
Mental health crises are urgent and important. You’re not wasting anyone’s time.
There is no shame in going to the emergency room when you're struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It’s the important first step in reaching out for help.
If you don’t want to call the emergencies
If you can keep yourself safe for a short while, but you still need urgent advice:
- Make an appointment with your local hospital (CAP in Catalonia)
- Contact a local mental health center (CSMA in Catalonia)
In your moments of darkness, you may feel like a burden. But the truth is, you are precious, and your life is irreplaceable. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, but a step toward reclaiming your future.
If you need to talk right now
If you have suicidal thoughts and want to talk about it, there are people you can talk to any time:
- The Phone of Hope / Teléfono de la Esperanza: 717 003 717 (website)
- Red Cross Suicidal Behavior Helpline: 024 (website)
024 also has an option to chat if you prefer not to call.
These services are for anyone who’s struggling, and they won’t judge you.
They’re free, they’re anonymous, and they’re almost always available.
The moment I called, I felt heard, not judged. They helped me to find hope again, not by giving me all the solutions, but by just reminding me that there’s always a way forward. That call saved my life.
If you are looking for a psychologist
If you don’t need urgent support but are looking for psychological support, you can:
- Try to get cost-free psychological care through the public hospitals (although availability may be very limited)
- Find a private psychologist in Spain, for example Сюди.
If you can’t find care in the public system, and can’t afford private care, you can review our support options сюди.
It takes courage to talk about the things that hurt, but doing so with a psychologist can make all the difference. You don’t have to carry your burdens alone—therapy is where you find the support and tools to carry on.
