Relationships and Boundaries

The goal of Social Companionship is support, not friendship - though friendships can and do develop naturally. Here's how to navigate that:
- Power balance: Even though you are equals as human beings, the fact that you are the volunteer and they are the Buddy creates a dynamic to be aware of. Try to be mindful of this, especially when making decisions about activities, communication, or the direction of the relationship.
- Friendships: If your relationship develops into a genuine friendship outside of the programme, that's wonderful - just let Iguality know so we can formally close the pair and you can continue freely without programme obligations.
- Romantic relationships: The Social Companionship programme is not a dating or matchmaking service. Romantic relationships between pairs are not permitted within the programme. If feelings develop on either side, inform Iguality as soon as possible - we will handle the conversation with care and together decide how to close the pair appropriately. We understand these things happen; what matters is transparency.
