In the first session, your goal is to begin building a safe, trusting space where the patient feels heard and supported. This means listening deeply, staying curious, and gently helping them open up about their story.
Useful techniques:
- Active listening and reflection
- Clarification and summarizing
- Asking about previous therapy experiences
- Exploring their hopes and expectations
- Non-verbal cues that show presence and empathy
Even though the agreement outlines key information, it’s good to revisit things like:
- Confidentiality
- What to do in case of cancellations or no-shows
- Privacy and data protection
By the end of the session — or when it feels right — you can suggest planning the next one and start shaping the rhythm of your work together.
After the first session, it’s time to start building continuity.
Whenever it feels natural — often at the end of the first or second session — set up a regular schedule with your patient. Weekly or bi-weekly sessions are ideal, depending on availability and emotional needs.
Within the first few sessions, we recommend setting clear, realistic goals together. This helps create focus and gives both of you a shared sense of direction. These goals can be flexible and evolve over time, but they serve as helpful milestones.
If you ever feel stuck, unclear about how to proceed, or just want another perspective, supervision and one-on-one support are always available to you.
