We work with people from many different backgrounds. Every patient brings a unique set of experiences, values, and expectations. Your role as a therapist is to approach each individual with curiosity, openness, and humility.
Working with migrants and refugees:
- Avoid assumptions — always ask about cultural context.
- Be aware of your own cultural lenses and biases.
- Ask about their legal, work, and housing situation.
- Be ready to explain what therapy is — many people may not have experience with it or might carry different beliefs about mental health.
At Iguality, we also collaborate with community groups (like Migracode or local training centers) to help patients feel more connected in their new environment.
Supporting LGBTQ+ individuals:
- Ask for pronouns — and use them.
- Avoid heteronormative language (say “partner” instead of “boyfriend/girlfriend”).
- Stay up to date on LGBTQ+ rights in their country of origin, especially if they’ve migrated.
If you're ever unsure about how to approach a cultural or identity-related topic, you can always ask for guidance or bring it to supervision.
