Creating a safe and welcoming space

Last updated: September 7, 2025 at 11:26

Everyone who joins Iguality activities should feel safe—physically, emotionally, and socially. As a volunteer, you help set this tone from the moment you greet people.

A safe space means:

  • Everyone feels free to be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion.
  • Differences in gender, ability, culture, or language are respected and embraced.
  • Physical safety is prioritized—no risky behavior, and activities are adjusted to accommodate all levels.

If you notice teasing, aggressive behavior, or microaggressions, gently but clearly step in. You can:

  • Check in with the affected person quietly.
  • Name the behavior (e.g., “Let’s keep it respectful for everyone”).
  • If needed, ask for support from another volunteer or the General Coordinator.

Building safety is not about control—it’s about presence, empathy, and creating a culture where everyone looks out for each other.
